Most carpet is treated with a protectant from the factory. It does not last forever. Foot traffic, cleanings, and normal wear and tear all remove a certain amount of protectant, and manufacturers recommend it be re-applied after every cleaning. There are several reasons to apply protectant:
1. Your carpet will look better and last longer. Protectant is the barrier between your carpet and dirt, similar to wax on your car. Studies have shown that carpet treated with protectant after each cleaning looks better and lasts much longer. Dirt is like sandpaper to your carpet, and protectant will reduce the adhesion of the dirt to the fiber.
2. Cleanings are more effective. Since dirt can’t adhere as rapidly to the fiber, your carpet will clean easier and with great results.
3. Stains are less likely to become permanent. You will be able to remove more stains quickly and with less headaches.
4. Protects your investment. Carpet is expensive, and is usually a major ordeal to get installed. Choosing protectant after each cleaning will prolong the life of your carpet, so you get the most out of it.
